On 31 October 2018, Singapore-based media and entertainment company mm2 Asia Ltd. (“mm2”) signed an MOU with Funkie Monkies (“FM”) to kickstart The Songwriter Music College (“TSMC”) that aims to groom more songwriters, singer-songwriters and music producers in Asia.
Both FM and mm2 have been working together since 2012, with a mission to push local music talents to a higher level. We have involved many local music talents in writing, producing and recording theme songs, soundtracks and background music for movies and other projects, giving them the opportunities and platforms to develop their skills and excel.
Over the years, Asia has witnessed the long-lasting popularity of singer-songwriters such as Jay Chou, Khalil Fong, and of course, our very own JJ Lin and Tanya Chua from Singapore, who gained critical acclaim for their ability to write, produce and brand their own songs. The trend inspired FM to join forces with mm2, to commit the resources needed to take their existing partnership to the next level, furthering the shared vision of providing for, grooming and developing local music talents. As a result, The Songwriter Music College (“TSMC”) is born.
TSMC aims to be Asia’s top training hub for songwriters, singer-songwriters and music producers by preparing students for industry realities, and opening doors for them to reach out to international media and record labels.
TSMC will be offering a one-year full time or two-year part-time diploma course to groom songwriters who aspire to be music producers, and another similar full time and part-time diploma course to groom singer-songwriters for the growing industry. The programmes infuse academic rigour while catering to industry realities. The programmes will provide in-depth focus on elements of songwriting, music production and performance. TSMC also features as many as 8 music studios for students to complete their assignments and hone their skills.
